Can I drive a minibus on a car licence?

The minibus rules are a list of conditions, and they are joined by 'and', not by 'or'. Break one and the concession is gone.
The conditions, as gov.uk states them
You might be able to drive a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats on your car licence "as long as there's no payment from or on behalf of the passengers (it's not for 'hire or reward')", and provided all of the following apply (gov.uk):
- you are 21 or older
- you have held your driving licence for at least 2 years
- you meet the Group 2 medical standards if you are over 70, which gov.uk suggests checking with your GP
- you are driving on a voluntary basis and the minibus is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body
- you are not towing a trailer
- the MAM of the minibus including passengers is not more than 3,500kg, or 4,250kg for electric or hydrogen vehicles, with an additional 750kg permitted for equipment for disabled passengers
'Hire or reward' is broader than a fare
It covers payment from passengers or on their behalf, so a per-head contribution towards fuel counts as readily as a ticket price. gov.uk's answer for organisations that need to recover running costs is a minibus permit: available where the vehicle carries between 9 and 16 passengers, you are driving for a voluntary organisation that benefits the community, the service is only available to members of that organisation rather than the general public, and any charges cover running costs and are not for profit. The driver must be 21 or older, and the permit is applied for from DVSA.
Commercial minibus work
If you want to drive a minibus commercially, or the conditions above do not apply, gov.uk requires both a minibus provisional entitlement, also known as a passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) licence, and a public service vehicle (PSV) operator licence. Category D1 itself covers vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres and a trailer up to 750kg.
Renewing at 70 with D1
gov.uk's minibus page sets out the renewal directly: if you are 70 or over and renewing, you need form D2 and a D4 medical examination report completed by a doctor, both available from a Post Office offering DVLA services, sent to the address in section F of the D2. The online renewal service cannot be used for C1 or D1 entitlement (gov.uk).
